Signs Your Hot Water Storage Tank Is Failing

Hot water storage tanks rarely stop working without warning. In many cases, there are a few early signs that something isn’t quite right.
Catching these issues early can help avoid a complete failure (and the dreaded cold shower).
1. Inconsistent water temperature
If your hot water suddenly turns cold during a shower or fluctuates between hot and lukewarm, it could indicate a failing heating element or thermostat.
2. Rusty or discoloured water
Brown or rusty-looking hot water may mean corrosion inside the tank or pipes. This can be a sign the system is nearing the end of its life.
3. Strange noises from the tank
Popping, banging or rumbling sounds often come from sediment building up inside the tank. Over time this reduces efficiency and can damage the system.
4. Water pooling around the unit
Any visible leaks around your hot water system should be checked quickly. Small leaks can become bigger problems if ignored.
5. Your system is over 10 years old
Many hot water systems last around 8–12 years. If yours is getting older and starting to show issues, it may be time to consider repair or replacement.
